NY short line RR. Nice vignette of steam train in the countryside with river scene in the background. Very small artist's interpretation of the New York state seal for the bottom vignette. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1868 from company records. Dated 18__ on the certificate. Approximately 10.5 x 6.5 inches.
The Middletown and Crawford Railroad started operations in 1868 and stopped service in 1932 for a total period of operations of 64 years. Chartered 1868. Completed in 1872 under lease of the New York and Oswego Midland Railroad; spun off as a private company 1875. It ran from Middletown to Pine Bush NY.
The property of the Middletown and Crawford was been operated by various companies from the date of completion to December 31, 1917, as follows:
- New York and Oswego Midland Railroad Company, 1872, to 1875.
- Own organization, 1875, to 1882.
- New York, Lake Erie and Western Railroad Company, 1882 to 1895.
- Erie, 1895, to 1917.
The property of the company was taken over for operation by the United States Railroad Administration on January 1, 1918, as a part of the system of the Erie.
