Minneapolis Theatre Company stock certificate 1936 (Minnesota)

Plain certificate with a lot of local Minneapolis history. Issued and not cancelled. Dated 1936. Vertical folds from previous mailing. Approximately 11 x 7 inches. 

Incorporated 1926, the Minneapolis Theatre Company was organized to fund the building of the Minneapolis Auditorium (1927). The company initially issued stock but later issued mortgage bonds (1927, 1941) for the venue’s operation. Believed to be taken over by the municipality after 1944 bankruptcy.

Built in 1926-1927, the Minneapolis Auditorium (1301 2nd Ave S) was a municipal space intended for a wide variety of gatherings, and in its early years was used for everything from circuses to political functions to Lutheran rallies.

In 1947, it became the first home for the newly formed NBA Minneapolis Lakers from 1947 until they moved to the Minneapolis Armory in 1959. In August 1964, the facility was renamed the Minneapolis Auditorium and Convention Center when a Convention Hall addition was erected.

The facility consisted of 3 areas in the combined building including: Convention Hall, Exhibit Hall, and Auditorium-Arena. The Minneapolis Auditorium was demolished for the Convention Center in the 1980s.
