Product Description

Mohawk and Malone Railway $1000 gold bond 1902 (New York)

Beautiful Adirondacks RR piece. Great multiple vignettes - large deer buck at the top and, at the bottom, a deer family gathered under a tree. Horizontal format. Issued and cancelled. No coupons attached. Dated 1902 from the text. Folds from storage. Measuring approximately 15 x 10 inches.

The Mohawk and Malone Railway was built by Dr. William Seward Webb and completed in 1892 to bring passengers and freight into the Adirondacks, connecting the Mohawk Valley to Montreal, Quebec. It was leased to the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad in 1893 and later merged into it as its "Adirondack Division" in 1913. The New York Central ran its final passenger train on the route in 1965, and much of the line was abandoned in the early 1970s. New York State purchased the Utica-Lake Placid line in 1974.

Current Status and Usage
The former Mohawk and Malone line is now a mixed-use corridor, managed in sections:

Utica to Tupper Lake (Rail): This segment is owned by New York State and managed for both freight and passenger rail.

The Adirondack Railroad operates seasonal passenger excursion trains on the southern portion, with service currently running from Utica to Tupper Lake.

The Mohawk, Adirondack and Northern Railroad operates freight services on the section between Utica and Lyons Falls.

Tupper Lake to Lake Placid (Rail Trail): The tracks on this 34-mile segment were removed between October 2020 and November 2021, and the corridor has been converted into the Adirondack Rail Trail for recreational use.
