Uncommon Oregon streetcar company. Awesome vignette of a streetcar full of passengers at the bottom. Orange border has four (4) corner vignettes of electric lights, old telephone, and a generator. Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 19__ but circa 1906 from company and state records. Measures approximately 11.5 x 9.5 inches.
The Oregon Electric Railway was a historic 122-mile interurban electric railroad that operated from 1906 to 1970, connecting Portland, Salem, Albany, and Eugene through the Willamette Valley. Passenger service ended in 1933, and freight operations fully converted to diesel in the 1950s. Became part of Railroad which merged with the Santa Fe Railway to become the modern BNSF Railway.
Route:
Ran 122 miles down the Willamette Valley, roughly parallel to the Southern Pacific tracks, with branches to Forest Grove and Corvallis.
Timeline:
Founded in 1906; reached Eugene by 1912.
Decline:
Passenger numbers dropped during the Great Depression, leading to the end of passenger runs in 1933.
Legacy:
Parts of the original right-of-way are still used for freight service today.
Museum:
The Oregon Electric Railway Museum at Powerland Heritage Park in Brooks, Oregon, preserves historic trolleys and transit equipment.
