Owyhee River Copper stock certificate 1939 (Nevada)

Uncommon NV mining not often seen. Nice vignette of miners working underground. Issued and not cancelled.  Dated 1939. Measures approximately 12 x 9 inches.

Incorporated 1935 in Nevada, the Owyhee River Copper was neighbor of the famous Mountain City Copper company. The mine was in Northern Elko County in the northern most part of Nevada.

The Owyhee River area in Nevada is known for its remote canyons, unique geology, and significant mining history. The Owyhee River area in Nevada has a history of copper mining, most notably the abandoned Rio Tinto Mine in Elko County, which significantly polluted Mill Creek (a tributary) and the river with metals like copper, cadmium, and zinc, prompting a major Superfund cleanup by the EPA and responsible companies.

The name of the river is from the older spelling of "Hawaii". It was named for three Native Hawaiian trappers (from the then little-known far-off Hawaiian Islands chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean). They were in the employ of the old North West Company (1779–1821) which was headquartered along the St. Lawrence River at Montreal, Quebec. They were sent to explore the uncharted river in the Rocky Mountains and far western North America continent. They failed to return to camp near the Boise River and were never seen again. Due to this, the river and its region were subsequently named "Owyhee".
