The Pennsylvania Soap Company, located in Lancaster, PA, was a notable early 20th-century manufacturer known for Miller's Soaps, Penn-Olive Soap, and Tub-o-Foam Chips. It also made soaps in the shape of a baby.
Founded in the 1880s as Miller’s Soap Works by Charles F. Miller, it was acquired by the Pennsylvania Soap Company in 1903, operating on Seymour Street near South Water Street.
Production & Growth:
By 1903-1904, the plant was a major industrial operation, frequently producing soap utilizing rail access for shipping.
Prohibition Era Scandal:
In November 1927, the plant was famously raided by federal agents who discovered a massive, illegal alcohol still capable of storing 85,000 gallons of liquor, hidden behind the legitimate soap production.
Site Legacy:
A painted sign for "MILLER'S SOAP WORKS" remained on the building facade for decades after the company's peak operations.
