The Standard Hub and Block Company was based in Philadelphia PA and had operations in Indianapolis IN about one hundred men and the amount paid weekly in wages to about $1,200. The company produced machined bicycle parts. The "hub and block" most commonly refers to a coaster brake hub, an internal braking system for single-speed bicycles. The "block" is a component inside the hub that engages a braking surface when you pedal backward, using friction to slow the wheel.
