The Submarine Signal Company (SSC), founded in Boston in 1901, was a pioneering firm in underwater acoustics, developing the first electronic underwater navigation aids like submarine bells and later the Fathometer depth sounder, eventually merging with Raytheon in 1946 to become a key part of their marine electronics division, driving innovations from early hydrophones to modern sonar technologies.
Foundation (1901):
Established to commercialize underwater sound research, SSC created systems using submerged bells for navigational warnings, initially using microphones on ship hulls to detect these signals.
Innovation with Fessenden:
SSC collaborated with inventor Reginald Fessenden, hiring him to improve their hydrophones, leading to significant advancements in underwater sound detection.
The Fathometer (1923):
SSC introduced the first commercial depth sounder (echo sounder) that provided continuous, detailed recordings of the seabed, revolutionizing marine surveying.
Expansion:
The company also developed radio direction finders and radiotelephones as radio navigation grew, notes.
Merger with Raytheon (1946):
Submarine Signal Company was acquired by Raytheon, forming Raytheon's Marine Division, integrating its expertise into a larger electronics company.
