Utica and Mohawk Railroad Co stock certificate c1871 (New York)

Rare early streetcar company in Utica NY. Fantastic and fitting vignette of a horse drawn trolley. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1871 from company records. Measures approximately 10.5 x 7 inches.

The Utica and Mohawk Railroad Company was a historic 19th-century street railway and transit provider formed in 1871 in Utica, New York, that later merged to form the Utica and Mohawk Valley Railway Company in 1901. In 1912, the system became part of the New York State Railways network, which was owned by the famous New York Central Railroad.

Origins:
The company operated local transit lines and electric trolleys around Utica, NY.

Utica Park:
The railroad company built and operated the popular Utica Park (later renamed Forest Park) at the eastern end of Bleecker Street to encourage ridership on its trolley lines.

Consolidation:
On November 28, 1901, a certificate of consolidation was filed to merge the Utica Belt Line Street Railroad Company and the Utica and Mohawk Railroad Company, creating the Utica and Mohawk Valley Railway

The End of the Line:
The trolley cars slowly stopped running between 1933 and 1941 as automobiles and buses became more popular.
