West Iron Gate Land Company stock certificate circa 1890

Beautiful piece of financial art.  Nice top vignette of the land near Iron Gate VA.  Great under print in color to make this piece.  Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 189_. Circa 1890 from company records.

Incorporated 1890 in Virginia, the company was a pig iron manufacturer which was originally founded as Hileman, Waring & Co.(founded 1884, name changed in 1890). The company was formed to ensure an adequate supply of materials was available for processing as well as a rail line.  

Originally a charcoal factory, the company expanded to coke and pig iron from ore on the company land.  The furnaces were located near Clifton Forge, VA. The forge had a capacity of 20-30 tons daily and had 5 mile railway line to connect to the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, west of Clifton Forge.

Iron Gate is a town in Alleghany County, Virginia, United States. The population was 388 at the 2010 census.
