The Western Maryland Tidewater Railroad Company was a subsidiary formed by the Western Maryland Railroad in 1883 to build and operate terminal facilities and rail lines along the Middle Branch of the Patapsco River in South Baltimore, creating the major shipping hub later known as Port Covington. It was formally merged or integrated into broader operations around 1905.
Developed the Port Covington rail and marine terminal area on the Patapsco River's Middle Branch. Built short connecting tracks in Baltimore to link inland freight routes directly to ocean-going vessels.
The Western Maryland Railway had long wanted to connect its ever-expanding railroad network with the Baltimore harbor and found Port Covington to be the perfect location. A railroad terminal there would serve as their “junction with the world” and allow the railway to grow its shipping networks and tap into the global market.
In 1883, the company formed the Western Maryland Tidewater Railroad Company, which sanctioned a new tidewater line, but the project stalled for almost twenty years. Construction of the connecting lines from Walbrook Junction, then outside of the city, down to Port Covington was completed in 1902, and the new railroad terminal was finished in 1904.
Operated as a separate corporate entity until fully absorbed into the parent system and subsequent mergers by 1905.Famous in Maryland legal history for a court case affirming that piers built out into the water extended municipal tax and police jurisdiction.
