Yorktown Hotel Corporation stock certificate 1932 (Virginia)

Plain but historically important stock. Issued and cancelled in 1932 to settle an estate while the company was going bust in the Depression. Measures approximately 11 x 8.25 inches.  

In the 1920s, investors planned to make a profit and protect a portion of the Yorktown Battlefield by building a country club and hotel around the battlefield landmarks. Investors wanted to make Yorktown an international gathering place and hoped this development would bring more interest to the area.

The country club would be invitation only, where members could enjoy recreational opportunities, such as fishing, boating, and hunting. The 300-room hotel would provide accommodations for visitors. Due to lack of funding, the project fell short not long after the dedication ceremony in 1926. The stock market crash ended hopes of the hotel by 1933 and completed the remainder of land transfers to the National Park Service.

Although the project failed, the idea of preserving the battlefield remained. In 1930, Colonial National Historical Park became a unit of the National Park Service, which lead to the preservation and protection of the battlefield. Today’s visitor center is located on the country club hotel site.
