Maine water utility company. Unusual vignette of a wide river flowing into a waterfall. Issued and cancelled. Dated 1972. Measures approximately 12 x 8 inches.
Consumers Water Company was an investor-owned water utility holding company founded in Portland, Maine, in 1926 by partners from the investment firm H.M. Payson. It operated subsidiaries across multiple states before being acquired and absorbed by the Philadelphia Suburban Corporation (now Aqua America) in 1999.
Foundation:
Established in Portland, Maine, by Herbert Payson, Harold C. Payson, and other partners to consolidate and manage water utility properties.
Growth:
Expanded to own and manage multiple water utility subsidiaries across states including Maine, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois.
Maine Presence:
Operated and acquired local Maine utilities over decades, such as the Camden and Rockland Water Company.
Acquisition:
Purchased by Philadelphia Suburban Corporation in 1999, ending its run as an independent Portland-based corporate entity.
