Product Description
Duluth, St. Cloud, Glencoe and Mankato Railway stock certificate c1900 (Minnesota)
Rare Minnesota railroad company. Nice vignette of the steam train at a station. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1900 from company records. Measures approximately 12 x 9 inches.
The Duluth, St. Cloud, Glencoe and Mankato Railway (reporting mark: DSCG) was a 20th-century American railroad company in Minnesota, famously nicknamed the "Alphabet Line" or "Alphabet Road" because its ambitious title listed major hub names it never actually reached.
Incorporation:
Founded in 1900 with the grand intent to link southern Minnesota rail hubs to Great Lakes ports/Duluth.
Actual Route:
Never reached Duluth, St. Cloud, Glencoe, or Mankato. Instead, it ran locally in southern Minnesota (from Albert Lea/Freeborn area through places like Matawan, Waldorf, and Pemberton/Cream to St. Clair by 1907).
The "Cream" Bypass:
Railroad investors shifted plans and built a depot in Pemberton instead of nearby Cream, causing Cream’s local businesses to relocate or vanish.
Acquisition:
Taken over on December 21, 1910, by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway (Milwaukee Road) and operated as a branch line.
Abandonment:
The active segments of the line were phased out/abandoned by the mid-1970s.
