Product Description

Morris and Essex Railroad $1000 gold bond certificate c1925 (New Jersey)

NJ short line RR. Great vignette of a train station with people and steam locomotives. Horizontal format. Unissued and not cancelled. Circa 1925 from bond text. Vertical fold from storage. Measuring approximately 13 x 9 inches.

The Morris & Essex Railroad Company was incorporated on January 29, 1835 and the line was opened on November 19, 1836. The New Jersey Railroad provided connecting service from Newark to Jersey City. The line originated at the foot of Centre Street and the Passaic River, running west along Centre Street and then north on Broad Street until turning west where the current tracks are.

The Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad leased the M&E on December 10, 1868, connecting to their Warren Railroad at Washington. In 1868 the Morris & Essex leased the Newark and Bloomfield Railroad, which connected Roseville Avenue to Bloomfield and Montclair, then West Bloomfield.

On July 26, 1945, the M&E was formally merged into the DL&W. However, it remained the Morris and Essex Division, and even today New Jersey Transit calls it the Morris and Essex Lines. In 1960 the DL&W merged with the Erie Railroad to form the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, becoming part of Conrail in 1976.
