Porter Gold & Silver Mining Company stock certificate c1863 (California)

Great 1860s California gold mining piece. Interesting vignette of what appears to a be a farming operation. Unissued and not cancelled. Dated 186_. Circa 1863 from incorporation printed on the cert. Approximately 9 x 5.5 inches. 

The Porter Gold & Silver Mining Company was incorporated in California on August 24, 1863. The company's offices were located in San Francisco.

The company's mines were located in Butte County and were centered around Table Mountain, which had a basalt layer that covered an important gold bearing Tertiary gravel. One of the company's claims was for a mile wide circle of land on Jordan Hill between the east branch and west fork of the Spanish River near Feathertown.

North Table Mountain and South Table Mountain are two prominent basaltic plateaus overlooking the city of Oroville, California. They are named for their flat surface, like a table top; because of this it is often mistakenly called Table Top Mountain.

Butte County is located in the northern central part of California and also includes the cities of Biggs and Chico.

The mines in Butte County were generally centered around Table Mountain, which has a basalt layer that covers an important gold bearing Tertiary gravel. Important companies of the period included the Oregon Gulch, Cherokee Blue Gravel. Other mines were located at Forbestown, Wyandotte, Bangor and a few other locales.
