Union Carbide Corporation is an American chemical and polymer manufacturer that has operated as a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company since February 6, 2001.
Founding & Petrochemicals Pioneer:
Formed on November 1, 1917, through the merger of four industrial companies (including the National Carbon Company and Linde Air Products). In 1920, its researchers developed a cost-efficient method to produce ethylene from natural gas, effectively launching the modern petrochemical industry.
Parent Company:
Acquired by The Dow Chemical Company in a transaction announced in 1999 and finalized in 2001.
Products:
Produces high-volume commodities and specialty chemicals/polymers used in paints, coatings, packaging, wire and cable, personal care, and pharmaceuticals.
Industrial & Consumer Footprint:
At its peak, Union Carbide manufactured industrial gases, plastics (e.g, polyethylene), and chemical building blocks. It also created and owned iconic consumer brands before divesting them, including Prestone antifreeze, Eveready and Energizer batteries, and Glad trash bags.
Bhopal Disaster:
The company is widely known for its connection to the December 1984 methylisocyanate gas leak at a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, operated by its affiliate Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL). The legal claims were settled in 1989 under the direction of the Supreme Court of India for $470 million.
