The Dante Gold Mining Company was a historic mining operation incorporated in Colorado Springs CO on September 20, 1895. It was active during the famous gold rush in the Cripple Creek Mining District of Teller County, Colorado.
The Dante mine, together with the Whisper block of the Gold Sovereign mine, was situated near the High Line track on the southwestern slope of Bull Hill, at an elevation of about 10,350 feet. The Jackson shaft of the Gold Sovereign mine was located about 700 feet southwest of the Dante shaft. The Dante Gold Mining Company, owning the Dante claim, was controlled by the Reed Investment Company, of Colorado Springs, but the property was worked by a number of lessees; sometimes as many as eight sets were at work.
Property:
(From a 1906 reference) The company owned the 10-acre Dante claim located on the southwestern slope of Bull Hill. The developments consist of the Dante shaft, 450 feet deep, from which six levels were turned. The various veins were opened by a complicated network of drifts and crosscuts, probably aggregating 4,000 feet on both properties, but not extending beyond a circle with a diameter of 400 feet.
Transactions:
Historical trade journals (1898) indicate dealings in leasing and stock for the Dante claim in the Cripple Creek mining district.
Ownership:
Over time, control shifted from its original founders to the Moon Anchor Company and Reed Investment Company of Colorado Springs. It was also active under lease to other entities like the Big Toad Gold Mining and Milling Company.
