The Golden Cycle Mining and Reduction Company was a historic gold mining and processing conglomerate based in Colorado. Originally incorporated in 1895 in West Virginia as the Golden Cycle Mining Company, it was renamed in 1915 to reflect its massive ore-processing operations.
The Largest Cyanide Mill:
Located in Colorado City (now Old Colorado City in Colorado Springs), the Golden Cycle Mill processed more than 14 million tons of gold ore—more than any other mill in the world at the time.
Cripple Creek Operations:
The company was the cornerstone of the Cripple Creek mining district, processing high-grade gold ore transported by rail. It eventually consolidated several major mines, including the Vindicator, Cresson, and Elkton mines.
Innovations:
The mill pioneered highly efficient cyanidation and roasting techniques, allowing for a 98% gold extraction rate.
Current Status:
The original mill closed in 1948. Today, the site is recognized for its historical significance and is mostly redeveloped into the Gold Hill Mesa neighborhood, with the mill's iconic smokestack preserved as a local landmark.
