The New Cornelia Copper Company was a major mining enterprise in Ajo, Arizona, credited with opening the state's first large-scale open-pit mine in 1917. Named after the first wife of founder John Boddie, it pioneered innovative leaching processes to extract copper from low-grade ores. After becoming a subsidiary of Calumet and Arizona Mining, it was eventually merged into the Phelps Dodge Corporation in 1931.

Early Organization:
Founded in 1890 by John Boddie and associates with four original claims.

Technological Breakthrough:
In 1912, the company successfully tested a leaching process for carbonate ores, making the Ajo deposits profitable.

Industrial Firsts:
The New Cornelia Mine became the first in Arizona to use steam shovels for large-scale open-pit mining in 1917.

Consolidation:
After a 1929 consolidation with Calumet and Arizona, the entire operation was acquired by Phelps Dodge in 1931.
